Larabars For the Win!

I have found the perfect protein-bar-like-snack.

I don’t know about you, but I for one have never been able to find a “bar” that I can eat without gagging a little bit. The chocolate flavored ones? Nope. Vanilla? Forget about it. Up until now I have avoided the protein bar section of every store and gym because I refuse to waste another $2.50 on something so unpleasant. I did, however, experiment one more time, and thank goodness for that.

Larabars come in many different flavors but here’s the best news: the ingredients list is always short, always words you know, and always delicious. The Carrot Cake bar, for example, is made of “almonds, walnuts, raisins, pineapple, unsweetened coconut, carrots, cinnamon, and extra virgin coconut oil.” That’s it. Nothing else. Nothing. Other flavors are even more simply, some with only 3 ingredients. And they are DELICIOUS.

Larabars were invented in Colorado by a genius named Lara Merriken and have expanded to include a few other products that look equally delicious but less low-FODMAP friendly.

All Larabars are gluten-free, and most are FODMAP friendly. Just read the ingredients list, which is extremely easy to follow, and find the ones that match your diet.  So far most seem perfectly acceptable, with the exception of Apple Pie because of those pesky apples.

Here in DC, Whole Foods sells them for $1.29 a piece or 16 (of your own mix & match design) for $19.99. Not the cheapest, but certainly not too expensive for such a great snack either.
